Design assisted by finite element analysis (FEA) / FEM dimensjonering av stålkonstruksjoner

Course 10. March: The second generation of the Eurocode 3 will include a new part: EN 1993-1-14. The new standard concerns use of the finite element method for analysis and design of steel structures. This course provides in-depth exploration of the new standard and is designed for practitioners with some FEA experience.

2026-03-10 08:45 - 16:00
Siste påmeldingsdag: 2026-03-06 16:00
Thon Hotel Slottsparken, Oslo, and via Teams

The new standard, EN 1993-1-14, covers both ultimate limit state (including fatigue) and service limit state, and gives rules and guidelines for the following key topics:

  • Modelling (geometry, boundary conditions, loads, materials, imperfections)
  • Analyses (everything from linear elastic analysis to analyses with geometric and material nonlinear effects, including imperfections)
  • Methods for design
  • Documentation

The course will be suitable for those who wish to gain insight into the new standard and for those who want to expand their FEA capabilities beyond linear elastic analyses and “hand calculations”. Participants will, for instance, learn how to determine the resistance directly from the analysis results, which can be useful when hand calculations become challenging. The course will not provide training in use of software. Furthermore, this is not a course in the theory of the finite element method, and participants are assumed to have some prior knowledge of the subject (however, a brief introduction/review will be provided).

Language: English.
